QUICK ANSWER

String or bistro lighting is weatherproof cable with spaced LED bulbs strung overhead between anchors, posts or guide wire. In Irving, Christmas Decor by Carruthers Decorative Lighting designs and installs these systems for restaurant patios, office courtyards, rooftop terraces and home backyards, then returns for bulb swaps and adjustments when needed.

Irving Patios, Pergolas and More

These are the spaces we wire most often, each with its own hang points, spans and power needs.

01

Backyard zig-zag canopies

Wide yards with no roof overhead get a canopy strung from house to poles and back. It turns an empty lawn into a usable outdoor room after sunset.

04

Catenary wire support

A tensioned steel guide wire carries the weight on longer spans, so the light cable is never the thing holding itself up. That keeps sag even and protects sockets.

02

Event lawns and venues

Venue lawns and wedding sites use long parallel runs or a center canopy. Installs can be permanent for a property that books events week after week.

05

Poles where walls run out

No tree or wall where you need one? Steel posts set in concrete or heavy planter poles create anchor points anywhere, finished to look like they belong.

03

Walkways and entry paths

A row of posts with swagged strands guides guests from the parking area to the door. It doubles as a welcome and a safety light.

06

Heavy-duty cable runs

Commercial strands use thicker jacketed cable and molded sockets built for outdoor exposure. They resist UV, summer heat and the twisting in the wind that ruins light-duty sets.

Three Layouts That Work in Most Irving Spaces

Most patios and yards fit one of three layouts. A perimeter run traces the edges and suits long, narrow spaces. A zig-zag canopy crosses back and forth overhead for full, even light over a seating area. A center canopy radiates from a single tall pole to the edges, which suits round spaces and fire pit circles.

We sketch the layout on a photo of your space so you can see it before install day.

Irving Spaces Built for Overhead Light

Irving runs from the Heritage District near Main Street up through Las Colinas and Valley Ranch, with SH 114 and Loop 12 tying it together. Our crews work all of it.

Las Colinas Urban Center

Office courtyards and mixed-use plazas around Lake Carolyn and the Mandalay Canal are natural fits for wall-to-wall strands. We keep wiring on building faces and leave generous headroom for foot traffic after work. Timers can bring the courtyard on at dusk for evening events and off before the building closes, all without a facilities call.

Heritage District

Older storefronts around Main Street in the Heritage District often have brick walls and small side patios. Anchors set in mortar joints and a short run to a post give these spaces a café feel without damaging the building. The district's walkable feel suits overhead light, and Heritage District patios often sit close to sidewalks where an even glow invites people passing by.

Toyota Music Factory area

Restaurants and bars near the Toyota Music Factory run late, busy patios on show nights. Commercial strands on catenary wire hold up to nightly use, and every span is placed where staff can reach it for service. On show nights, a dead strand is lost business, so we wire runs so a single failed bulb never darkens the rest of the patio.

Valley Ranch backyards

Valley Ranch homes often back onto canals or greenbelts with open yards. A canopy from the house to steel posts creates an outdoor room, and dimmers keep the glow soft for neighbors across the water. Shatter-resistant bulbs suit yards where kids play near the water. Posts painted to match fencing keep the setup looking intentional from the canal side.

Restaurant Patios That Stay Lit

On a restaurant or bar patio, a dead strand on a Friday night is a real problem. We design commercial installs so one failed bulb never takes down a whole run, every span can be reached for service and the layout lights tables evenly.

We also think about the street view. Strands visible from the sidewalk or parking lot act as a sign that the patio is open. That is a reason to keep lines straight, spacing even and the glow consistent from end to end.

  • One bulb failure never darkens a run

  • Every span reachable for service

  • Even light across every table

  • Straight lines that read well from the street

How We Build a Irving Quote

Every quote is built from your space, so these are the details that move it.

Mounting surfaces

Brick, stone, stucco and wood each need different anchors and sealing. Hard masonry surfaces and tall attachment points take more time to drill and finish cleanly.

Commercial requirements

Restaurants and venues often need heavier cable, more anchor points and service access that staff can reach. Those details add durability for nightly use and some cost.

Power and controls

Using an existing outdoor outlet is the simplest setup. Adding dimmers, timers, smart plugs or a new circuit from a licensed electrician changes the scope of the job.

Number of spans

Each span needs two solid anchor points and often guide wire. A zig-zag canopy with many crossings takes more hardware than a single perimeter run.

Site conditions

Slopes, tree canopies, pool decks and tight side yards can each add steps. We note them on the site visit so the quote has no surprises.

Before You Book: Common Questions

Have a question we didn’t cover? Call 972-620-9560 or request a free quote online.

Can you run lights from the house to a tree line or pergola?

–

Yes. A tensioned steel guide wire spans from the house to a post, tree or pergola, and the strand rides along it. In Irving backyards with mature trees, we use adjustable straps on the trunk so the tree is never girdled as it grows.

How long does a typical backyard install take?

–

Most residential patios and backyards are finished in a single day. Jobs that need posts set in concrete, long catenary spans or work at second-story height can take longer, and we tell you the expected timeline when we send the quote so you can plan.

How do you hang lights where there is no wall or tree?

–

We create anchor points. Steel posts set in concrete or heavy planter poles go where the layout needs them, and a tensioned guide wire runs between them. The posts can be painted to match fencing or trim so they look like part of the space.

Can a business patio get holiday décor too?

–

Yes. Holiday lighting and décor is our main business. For Irving restaurants, venues and commercial properties, we can add wreaths, garland, lit trees and building lighting around the patio, with design, installation, in-season service and removal handled by one team.

Do I need a new outdoor outlet?

–

It depends on where power sits today. LED strands draw little power, so an existing outdoor GFCI outlet usually works fine. When a hard-wired switch or new circuit makes sense, a licensed electrician handles that piece and we coordinate the layout around it.

Do you service lights another company installed?

–

Often, yes. We can look at an existing system, replace bulbs, re-tension sagging spans or rebuild a run with better hardware. If the original strands are light-duty retail sets, we will tell you honestly whether repair or replacement makes more sense for the space.

What is the difference between bistro, café and string lights?

–

In Irving, people use all three names for the same thing: large bulbs on an outdoor cable, strung overhead. What matters is the build. We hang commercial-grade strands with molded sockets and heavy cable, and you choose the bulb shape that gives the look you want.

Do you work with HOAs, landlords and pergola builders?

–

We do. Planning with a pergola or patio builder early means hang points and power can be built in rather than added later. For HOAs and landlords, we follow their attachment rules, share a layout in advance and provide certificates of insurance when asked.

What drives the cost of a string light install?

–

The main drivers are how many feet of strand, how many spans and anchor points, whether posts are needed and what controls you want. Height and mounting surfaces matter too. We quote from a site visit and real measurements, not a flat rate.
